Mike Rowbotham, a fourth-year commercial electrician apprentice, was among those on hand Monday morning helping set up power for this weekend’s Warren Relay for Life.
Donating their time and expertise, IBEW Local 573 continued a long-standing community service project this week for the Warren Relay for Life.
Members, apprentices and retirees spent part of their Monday morning setting up electrical service for team tents on Courthouse Square.
“This event has been near and dear to our hearts for a long time,” said Jack Morse, business manager for IBEW Local 573. “It’s good for the town, and good for our local to be out here showing this aspect of our work.”
The Warren Relay for Life was started in 1993 and is one of the largest throughout the state. Thousands of people are expected to fill Courthouse Square this weekend.
“We get out here about a week ahead of time,” Morse said. “Local 573 brothers for the past 20-plus years have been doing the electrical hook-ups for all the tents and trailers that are going to be here.”
Along with donating their electrical services, members also help raise money by selling homemade pulled pork sandwiches and sautéed buttered mushrooms throughout the event.
“It’s been a crowd favorite here,” Morse said. “People come looking for them every year.”
The Warren Relay for Life starts Friday, May 10 at 6 p.m. and runs through Saturday afternoon on Courthouse Square.
