Application period opens for LMCC Scholarship at Youngstown State

Now through May 1, applications are being accepted for the Mahoning Valley LMCC Scholarship through The Youngstown State University Foundation.

Eligibility requirements include:

  • Must be at least a sophomore
  • A minimum 2.5 GPA
  • Full- or part-time student

A joint labor-management committee consisting of IBEW Local 64 of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association fund the scholarship.

Eligible candidates must be IBEW Local 64 members, employees of signatory electrical contractors in the Mahoning Valley, or family members of members or employees. Preference is given to students pursuing degrees that benefit the electrical industry.

Last year’s $1,000 recipient was Ryan Gates, whose stepfather, Jeff Watts, is a journeyman electrician with IBEW Local 64.

“The Mahoning Valley LMCC scholarship is a great opportunity to partner with The YSU Foundation, allowing us to promote the value of education and to give back to our members and community,” said Tom Lipka, executive director of the local NEA chapter.

The scholarship has been awarded since 2017.

Jeff Watts, left, and stepson Ryan Gates are both in the electrical field. In 2021, Gates, a student at Youngstown State University, was awarded a $1,000 Labor Management Cooperation Committee scholarship funded by the National Electrical Contractors Association-International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (NECA-IBEW). Watts is a journeyman electrician with IBEW Local 64.

“Through this scholarship, IBEW Local 64 can help foster education and career goals for our members and their families,” said Scott Satterlee, business manager.
